Transitioning from historical narratives to consciousness
Noted sculptor Cai Zhisong's ongoing exhibition in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, takes audiences on a journey of his explorations and changes in his creative style since the 1990s.
His early series, "Motherland" (Gu Guo), offers a moment for meditation on history through his depictions of historical figures. After gaining widespread attention, he went on to create the "Rose" series, in which the coexistence of fragile beauty and coldness engages the audience in a discussion that reflects on the weight of life. Meanwhile, his latest works in the current exhibition highlight his most recent transition, from taking a figurative approach, as displayed in the "Motherland" and "Rose" series, to a minimalist method in which he directs people to examine their own consciousness.
The exhibition, titled Reflection and curated by Yan Hong, is held at the 56 Cultural and Creative Industrial Zone until Nov 21.
