China courts stress facts, evidence in Lhasa, Urumqi riots trials

BEIJING - Chinese courts laid special stress on facts and evidence in the trials of suspects involved in the riots in Lhasa in 2008 and in Urumqi last year, said a report delivered by the country's chief justice to the parliament Thursday.

The courts handled the cases in the principle of "to punish only a handful of criminals but unite, educate and win over the majority", said the report.

Wang Shengjun, president of the Supreme People's Court, delivered the report to nearly 3,000 lawmakers at the Third Session of the 11th National People's Congress.
