Guizhou to boost its liquor industry

By Jin Zhu and Su Jiangyuan | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-03-06 15:35

Southwest China's Guizhou province will continue to boost its baijiu, or white liquor, industry, which will likely not be affected by the country's recent ban on alcohol in military units, as well as the pledge by the central authorities to crack down on extravagant banquets, an official said on Wednesday.

"Liquor consumption at government receptions was always quite limited compared with private consumption. Therefore, there is almost no impact on the development of the local baijiu industry," said Wang Bingqing, mayor of Zunyi and also a deputy to the National People's Congress.

The production of Moutai, a well-known Chinese baijiu brand, will reach 45,000 kiloliters by the end of 2015, according to a provincial plan to boost the industry released last year.

The target will not be changed, Wang added.
