Paper books still matter

Despite the rising popularity of e-reading, brick-and-mortar bookstores remain popular haunts for some customers.

With a history of more than 80 years, the Sanlian Bookstore is one of the most prestigious in Beijing. To attract more young readers, the bookstore started operating around the clock from April last year.

The move came against the backdrop of many bookstores closing under the pressure of rising costs and the impact of digital reading, and it was well-received among young readers with sales booming since the 24/7 operation began.

The success of the Sanlian Bookstore might be partly thanks to complementary products such as coffee and small gifts, but what's most important is the quality of books it offers and the time-honored brand it built over past decades.
