Police in Pingtan county of east China's Fujian province have launched a campaign to punish road traffic transgressions.

On Monday, the first day of the two-month campaign, the authorities organized more police officers to direct traffic and take action against those who break traffic rules.

It is not uncommon to see chaos at many of Pingtan's crossroads, as motorbikes often squeeze into the main roads reserved for cars and buses, and it seems some of Pingtan's motorcyclists still need to be educated about the meaning and importance of the rules.

One motorcyclist, surnamed Lin, said he understood the traffic regulations, but thought it more convenient to ride in the bus lane. And a woman surnamed Chen said she was just “following the trend”.

All violators caught on Monday were given a police caution and had to attend an education session at their local public security bureau.

Two-wheeled vehicles are supposed to ride in the right lane and cannot cut into other lanes, in order to ensure everyone's safety, said Lin Mousheng, a police officer.
