Local kids take interest in ancient Chinese musical instrument

On the morning of October 13, Wu Mingtao, a famed guqin player and director of both China's Academy of Guqin and Suzhou Wu School Guqin Association, performed three pieces of traditional repertoire, "Meihua San Nong" (Three Variations on the Plum Blossom Theme), "Pu'an Zhou" (The Mantra of Pu'an), and "Drunken Maniac" at the Suzhou Industrial Park Youth & Children Centre.

Known as "the father of Chinese music" or "the instrument of the sages", the guqin, literally "ancient stringed instrument", is a seven-stringed Chinese plucking musical instrument of the zither family. It has been deemed by ancient scholars as one of the four arts, and the other three are go chess, calligraphy, and painting. The performance is scheduled during 2013 Suzhou Traditional Arts Festival for Children & Teenagers and aims to cultivate interest in cultural legacies among young generations.
