Importance of quality education

Comments on "President stresses educational development", (China Daily, July 15)

President Hu Jintao stressed the importance of the development of education, especially the "quality of education", at the high-profile work conference on national education on July 14. Hu's concept is very important for education reform and development.

"Quality learning" depends on two factors. The first is an individual's diligence, intellect, initiative and passion. The second is educational institutions.

To make the education system more efficient, the authorities should pay special attention to information, knowledge and skills. Emphasis on the three should be laid at different stages of a person's education. What and when the education system focuses on will decide its outcome (education quality).

For example, if schools emphasize on passing down information through lectures, students may get bored because they can get them from books, newspapers, magazines and journals. So they have to find a smarter way to impart information - and knowledge and skills - to students.
