Singles Day greetings from the 'White House'

On the eve of Singles Day, US actor Kevin Spacey, reprising his role from the blockbuster TV series House of Cards, encouraged Chinese customers to buy items such as burner phones, presidential M&Ms or replicas of his class ring from The Sentinel.

Mr Spacey, who addressed the audience in a video during the TV gala hosted by Alibaba Group, said he was "more than a little jealous" of the "amazing deals" online.

"Here at the White House, there's so many firewalls blocking me from shopping online that not even the president will be able to take advantage of those amazing deals you'll see online during this holiday," said Mr. Spacey, in his role of power hungry and amoral President Frank Underwood.

He also quotes Alibaba Executive Chairman Jack Ma, saying: "Today is hard. Tomorrow will be worse. But the day after tomorrow will be sunshine."
